If you’re reading this, you’re likely standing where I once stood: at the beginning of a daunting but necessary journey to build your public speaking skills and confidence.
If you're like I was getting started you're likely feeling at least one of these:
Confused about where to start.
Stressed by a new speaking or presentation demand.
Frustrated by a chronic anxiety you can't seem to shake.
Maybe even all the above!l
I get it. I've been where you are. and I understand what's ahead of you on this path because I've travelled it myself .
There's a Chinese Proverb I share in my seminars that goes, "if you want to know the road ahead, ask someone coming back."
Well, I'm someone coming back.
I've faced intense situations in my life - jumped from airplanes, scuba dove with sharks, but there was no more intense fear I had to face then my fear of public speaking. Not even close!
Whenever I had to speak in front of a group I would shake, and sweat and I'd feel my heart racing as I struggled to express myself coherently. It was awful, painful even.
At that time my strategy for coping was to simply to avoid public speaking situations at all cost. Maybe you're experimenting with that yourself. Well, take it from me, it's a terrible strategy, and I knew that, but it felt better than continuously experiencing the painful, stressful, anxiety.
I began to realize that my strategy of 'avoiding at all costs' was, in fact, costing me too much. I was missing out on various opportunities in my life.
An opportunity presented to get start up capital and support to launch my own company! I had an idea I was excited about at the time that I thought could be successful.
One big problem! In order to proceed I had to pitch my idea to a panel of potential investors in front of an audience! No it wasn't Sharks Tank, but it might as well have been. Well I backed out. I regretted that so much that I vowed that I'd never allow fear to get in the way of my potential again!
I searched for a coach who understood my struggles and possessed the knowledge and experience to guide me in transforming from the shaky speaker I was to the confident speaker I wanted to become.
After a long search yielded no results, I took matters into my own hands and decided to become my own coach.
I read every book I could find about public speaking, joined speaking clubs, attended workshops and training courses, and participated in public speaking contests. As an even more creative challenge to confront my fear, I even tried stand-up comedy.
While all my experiences in front of audiences were definitely helpful, the most important growth I experienced occurred through the work I did on my subconscious mind. I had many teachers in that regard, and It was through that inner work that I was gradually able to transform the fear I harboured into a passion for speaking to audiences.
As my efforts paid off and my confidence grew, I started attracting individuals who were at earlier stages of their journey and needed support and encouragement to get started.
I was inspired to create a small public speaking workshop called 'Ignite Your Inner Speaker' to provide people with practice. Little did I realize at the time, this marked the beginning of a whole new career for me as a public speaking coach. Gradually, it became my personal mission to help people break through their fears and self-imposed limitations, enabling them to become the confident and engaging human beings they truly aspire to be.
I have been coaching people for over 15 years in various important areas of communication, but my true passion lies in helping individuals overcome the grip of public speaking fear and transform into confident speakers.
This passion stems from my personal experience and understanding of the profound and lasting impact such a transformation can have on your life.
Because I lived it, I can teach it.
